Google finally confirmed what even moderately-savvy website owners have known for years: the Meta Keywords tag holds no value in Google’s search rankings. This little tidbit of information has been the subject of much debate for years, and while many website owners have come around to the truth, this search engine optimization (SEO) fallacy is still a dominant force, even amongst some self-proclaimed professional SEO companies.
This announcement, while about 7 years overdue, is good news on several levels. Now, for those of us who know the true value of the meta keywords tag for Google (as well as other search engines), we have an authoritative resource to show all the naysayers and ignorant SEO providers that the meta keywords tag is dead for Google, at least. Secondly, this should hopefully filter down, eventually, into mainstream knowledge whereby the focus for effective on-page optimization tactics moves from ‘tweaking the meta keywords and meta descriptions’ to the betterment of important on-page elements like page titles, page names, and keyword usage within the content.
All in all, this long-overdue declaration should do a lot of good. If nothing else, now knowing what you know, you can avoid SEO companies who offer to optimize your meta description and meta keywords tags to help you improve your rankings in Google. There are a lot of misinformed / ignorant / scamming SEO providers out there, and hopefully this little announcement will keep you from giving your money to these types of service providers.
